Trojan wrestlers qualify three

The Fruitport wrestling team took on the Division 2 individual district tournament Saturday, qualifying three wrestlers for the regional tournament.

Crue Cooper led the way with a runner-up finish in the 171 lbs bracket, picking up a 9-2 decision in the semifinals before falling by the same score in the finals to Ryan Ringler (40-0) of Cedar Springs.

Dominic Dault returned to the Trojan lineup finishing third overall at 135 lbs after falling in the quarterfinals via pin. In the consolation bracket, Dault picked up an 8-7 decision in the blood round to clinch his spot at regionals before winning the consolation final with a second-round pin.

Connor Sykes rounded out Fruitport’s top-four finishes with a third-place run through the 119 lbs bracket.

Laker wrestlers qualify three

The Spring Lake wrestling team joined the Trojans at the Division 2 wrestling individual districts, qualifying a trio of wrestlers for next week’s regional.

Jack Parker led the effort with a title-run through the 103 lbs bracket, picking up a technical-fall victory in his opening round match before pinning his semifinal opponent in the second round.

Parker would meet some familiar competition in the finals, as fellow Laker Max Montgomery cracked the final with two first-round pins and an 11-4 decision.

The final was short-lived, as Parker picked up a pinfall victory in just 12 seconds.

Jamie Holt also punched his ticket to the regional tournament with a fourth-place finish at 125 lbs. Holt won his first match by decision, 7-2, before falling in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Holt picked up a major decision, 10-2, in the blood round to clinch his spot in the regional before falling in the consolation finals by pin.

Sykes win his first two matches via pinfall before falling in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, he would pick up an 11-second pin in the semifinals and a 57-second pin in the finals to secure his spot in the regional tournament.

Fruitport bowling runner-up at Mona Shores

The Fruitport boys bowling team finished with runner-up honors at the Mona Shores Invitational on Saturday with tremendous team depth, qualifying third overall without a single bowling in the individual top 10.

The Trojans won their first Baker set against Cedar Springs 396-332 before taking down Oakridge 395-340 in the semifinals. Fruitport then met Grand Haven in the finals, falling to the Bucs 312 to 392.

Connor Hines led the squad with a high game of 210 and a high series of 564, followed by Eli Covert at 190-533, Cameron Weaver at 225-526, Evan Simonis at 181-492 and Jon Wildey at 187-432.

The Fruitport girls battled a tough field, missing the cut to the final eight. They were led by individual medalist Jessica Plichta with a 506, while Kennadi Dykstra bowled a 154-419, Charlee Vollmer rolled a 136-384, Olivia Langlois 147-372 and Grace Falkowski 105-584.

Fruitport boys hoops downs Calvary

The Fruitport boys basketball team picked up a non-conference victory over Fruitport Calvary Christian on Saturday night, 61-38.

The game sat tied 8-8 at the first break, before the Trojans took a 25-15 lead into halftime and a 43-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Trojans enjoyed key contributions from every player. Gavin Fisher led the way with 20 points, while Luke Mitchell added 10 and Rico Jones added seven, Hunter Gannon six, Flynn Stonecypher five, Cam Schultz and Ethan Flores four apiece, Adam Eitniear three and Logan Manciu two.

Fruitport returns to action today as they travel to Jenison for a rescheduled conference game.
