The MIAA is the oldest athletic conference in the country, dating back to its founding in 1888. Currently, the league is made up of nine schools including Hope College, Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Olivet College, St. Mary’s College, Trine University and Calvin University.
Each year, the conference announces its academic honor roll, consisting of all student-athletes who earned a varsity letter and achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Spring Lake alum and recent Hope grad Mackenzie Schmidt highlights the group as a four-time honoree while competing for the Flying Dutch cross country team.
Chase Palmer, Alec Palmer, Mast Garrison, and Hannah Kenny are on track to complete the four-peat as juniors. Both Palmer boys have represented the Lakers well, making the honor roll three times as juniors on the Albion mens lacrosse team, while Kenny continues to lead the Bucs with three awards as a junior for the Hope cross country and track and field teams. Garrison traded his blue and gold in for maroon, earning three honor roll distinctions through his junior year on the Alma mens soccer team.
The Lakers led local high schools with 13 honorees, including Drew Fogel as a freshman for the Albion swim team, Alec Palmer as a senior for the Albion lacrosse team, Chase Palmer as a senior for the Albion lacrosse team, Alison Brown as a sophomore for the Alma swim team, Will Brown as a freshman for the Alma swim and track and field teams, Nathaniel Hentschel as a junior for the Hope lacrosse team, Ben Kramer as a senior for the Hope golf team, Julia Bachmann as a sophomore for the Kalamazoo tennis team, Jakob Frederick as a senior for the Kalamazoo football team, Grant Stille as a junior for the Kalamazoo swim team, Griffin Lorimer as a freshman for the Trine basketball team, and Lacie Piekarski as a senior for the Trine cross country and track and field teams.
Grand Haven saw three alumni honorees including Garrison, Kenny and Matthew VanHeest for the Hope football and track and field teams as a junior.
The Warriors of Western Michigan Christian matched the Bucs with three honorees including Samuel Braak as a freshman for the Calvin track and field teams, Benjamin DeKryger as a sophomore for the Calvin track and field team and Christopher Visser as a junior for the Calvin track and field teams.
This year’s honor roll was the largest in the conference history with 1,357 student-athletes meeting the requirements. Of those Hope led the way with 234 honorees, followed by Calvin (187), Trine (172), and Albion (170).
Of the 1,357 honorees, 170 posted a 4.0 GPA for the year while 238 were two-sport letter earners and 98 earned a letter in three sports.
