SPRING LAKE TWP. — Lake Hills Elementary School students began their morning work Monday by turning little paper plates into little blue ribbons.

The morning activity was part of a weeklong celebration at the school for being named a National Blue Ribbon School.

Last week, Grand Haven Area Public Schools officials went to Washington, D.C., to participate in the national ceremony to honor Lake Hills and Rosy Mound elementary schools for receiving the honor. Lake Hills Principal Jason Lawson was also awarded the Terrel H. Bell Award.

Spring Lake’s Jeffers and Holmes elementary schools were also named 2018 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The paper-plate blue ribbons made by Lake Hills students will be used to decorate the school. Later this week, the students will be encouraged to wear blue for a school picture.

Fourth-grader Mackenzie Myers said she thought it was nice to celebrate the achievement.

The celebration made fourth-grader Katalina Hampton feel excited because it means they can receive recognition for their hard work.
