NOCHS is commemorating 100 years with an event at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at the Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium. The evening will include a performance by the Fred Knapp Band, a live broadcast by WAWL-FM’s Eric Kaelin and free T-shirts for the first 200 guests.
The celebration will also include a special Musical Fountain show.
Throughout the year, NOCHS employees have looked back at the Grand Haven-based health system’s history. A temporary timeline exhibit will be unveiled during Thursday’s event and displayed in the North Ottawa Community Hospital lobby.
NOCHS spokeswoman Jen VanSkiver said the exhibit wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of Loutit District Library and the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. She said it was an honor looking back at the health system’s history.
“You can’t spend enough time understanding where you’ve been,” VanSkiver said. “That perspective really helps to inform where you need to go.”
A time capsule is also being coordinated with the centennial, and it will be buried somewhere on the hospital’s campus.
The health system has launched an advertising and social media marketing campaign called “We are one,” which is aimed at being inclusive, showing that health is achieved by people and not a building, VanSkiver said. It’s the same charge set by the hospital’s founder, William Hatton, to work together. The campaign serves as a reminder of how they got to where they are today, VanSkiver said, and the decisions that need to be made in the future to keep NOCHS viable.
Summer Fitness Sampler
Throughout the summer, NOCHS and collaborating partners Tri-Cities Historical Museum, Tri-Cities Family YMCA, Generation Care, Monica Verplank and Four Pointes Center for Successful Aging are hosting a Summer Fitness Sampler to give people a chance to try activities free of charge. All classes will be offered at the Waterfront Stadium.
Historical walks will take place 9:30-11 a.m. June 18, 25 and July 2. The walks will start at the Brass River between The Depot and Chamber building. To register for the walks, call 616-842-0700.
Pilates will be offered 10-11 a.m. June 18 and strength training will take place 10-11 a.m. June 25. Meditation will be held 10-11 a.m. July 9 and yoga will be offered 10-11 a.m. July 16. The Summer Fitness Sampler is slated to conclude with tai chi from 10-11 a.m. July 23.
Yoga and pilates participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat, blanket or towel. Classes will be canceled for inclement weather.
