GRAND HAVEN TWP. — A 3-year-old Muskegon boy was run over by his father’s van twice while the family was trick-or-treating in a Grand Haven-area subdivision Wednesday night, police said.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene at 7:38 p.m.

A 36-year-old Muskegon man told police that he was driving his Dodge Caravan at about 3 mph north on Hofma Drive near Thornapple Street in the Forest Park neighborhood with both of the van’s sliding doors open, said Sgt. Christie Wendt. The man’s sons, ages 3 and 7, were seated on the floor of the van with their legs hanging out of the open door when the younger boy either fell or jumped out of the moving vehicle.

Witnesses then began to yell at the driver. The man stopped the van, but then put it in reverse and ran over the child’s lower extremity. The father then put the van into drive and ran over the boy’s lower extremity a second time.

The 3-year-old was transported by a North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon with non-life-threatening injuries, Wendt said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
