GRAND HAVEN TWP. — A local man is “lucky to be alive,” according to police, after his vehicle swerved off Mercury Drive and crashed into the elevated bike path that runs along Millhouse Bayou.

The driver of the vehicle, who declined to give his name, said he fell asleep at the wheel moments before the crash.

“No drinking, no texting, no drugs,” he said, adding that he had just worked a 12-hour shift and was returning home when he nodded off.

He was traveling southeast on Mercury Drive and had just passed Bignell Drive when his Ford Taurus left the road, narrowly missing the guardrail and instead plowing through the underbrush and into the wooden bike path.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeff Somers was on the scene and said that, based on the condition of the car, the driver is “lucky to be alive.”
