Norton Shores man dies in crash with semi near Coopersville

POLKTON TWP. — A Muskegon-area man was killed early Friday morning when his pickup truck crashed head-on into a semi-truck near Coopersville.

Ottawa County Sheriff's Office deputies along with other emergency personnel responded to the crash in Polkton Township at 4:19 a.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the pickup truck was traveling south on 68th Avenue, north of Garfield Street, when it entered into the opposing lane of traffic and struck the northbound semi head on. 

The driver of the pickup, a 40-year-old Norton Shores man, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash, said Sgt. Derek Gerencer of the Sheriff’s Office. The man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the semi, a 22-year-old Twin Lake man, was not injured. Gerencer said the truck driver was wearing a seat belt.

Names were not released.

The intersection of 68th Avenue and Garfield Street was closed for several hours after the crash, which remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.

Assisting deputies at the scene were Crockery Township firefighters and Life EMS paramedics.
