SPRING LAKE — A chilly breeze didn't contribute much to crowd counts during Monday's opening events, but the 44th annual Spring Lake Heritage Festival is officially underway.

Senior citizens dodged a large pool in the parking lot at Mill Point Park to partake in bingo, coffee, doughnuts, lunch and an American Legion-sponsored flag ceremony.

Marsha VanPoortfliet won gift certificates to Applebee's and Pizza Hut during Monday's bingo games. After Senior Day, she visited the Artisan & Street Market, which continues in the Harvest Bible Chapel parking lot today from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Spring Lake resident Gayle Sikkenga visited the festival with Frankie Folkert, 7, a Grand Haven Christian School second-grader.

“We're just spending the day together and I said, 'Let's go check out the market,'” Sikkenga said.

They shopped for character bracelets at one of the vendors.

“I like Mickey (Mouse),” Frankie said. “Who doesn't?”
