The Grand Haven Elks Lodge will host a Flag Day ceremony at the Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium on Friday, June 14, at 6 p.m.

Event organizer Michael Laukes said eight historic flags will be presented at the short ceremony.

Laukes, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, stressed the significance of Flag Day.

“I’m one of those old farts who stand up every time the flag goes by,” he said. “It chokes me up. I was 4 1/2 years old when D-Day took place. I grew up with the war, going to Declaration Day with my bike all decorated. We have to honor those who have done so much.”

The Acapella Bellas — an all-women barbershop quartet — will perform at the ceremony.

Laukes said he hopes families — and especially those with young kids — will take the opportunity to attend the event and learn more about the history of the United States flag.

“It’s so important to pass this down to our kids, to realize that it’s not just something from an old movie,” he said.

Laukes noted that people who have old flags can bring them to the ceremony. Those flags will be passed along to the American Legion Charles A. Conklin post, which will host a flag retirement event at 7 p.m. Friday.
