Larry graduated from Grand Haven Public High School and Muskegon Community College, and retired from GTE/Verizon in 1992. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Dunes and served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He enjoyed flying his radio-controlled gliders with several model aircraft groups in West Michigan. He was a member of The League of Silent Flight and the West Michigan Soaring Society, where he held many offices, and a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Larry and Marna enjoyed traveling and being snowbirds in Florida and Arizona for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Marna; two daughters, Dawn (Eric) Scott of Grand Haven and Heather (Jason) Ring of Norton Shores; six grandchildren: Jacob and Trevor Larkins, Morgan Yost, Abel Scott, Kelsey and Ethan Ring; two sisters, Shirley Hanson and Ellen Jeffery; sisters-in-law, Beth (Ken) VanProoyen and Lora (Steve) Schwarzer; extended family, Chris Bethke; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie; mother and step-dad, Doris and F.R. McCaleb; nephew, Craig “Buzz” Hanson; and faithful canine companions, Bear and Sadie.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2018, at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes with the Rev. Louis Grettenberger officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2018, at The VanZantwick Chapel (620 Washington Ave).
