The Grand Haven volleyball team closed out their regular season on a high note Wednesday with a sweep of their final O-K Red Conference round robin, picking up wins over East Kentwood, 3-2, and Grandville, 3-0.

“We talked tonight about building momentum,” said Grand Haven head coach Aaron Smaka. “It was nice to do that especially in that last match against Grandville after losing to them on our Senior Night.

“We took care of the ball, we passed well, we hit well and we limited our mistakes. A lot of the things we have been working on finally came together. We are hoping to use this as a springboard to play our best volleyball in November.”

East Kentwood provided compelling theater with a five-set match. The Bucs took the opening set, 26-16, before dropping Sets 2 and 3, 23-25, 25-18. Set 4 was another nail-biter as Grand Haven took it in extra points, 27-25, to force a fifth, where they again went overtime for a 17-15 win for the Bucs.

Grand Haven pulled out all the stops vs. Grandville, taking a quick win by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-17.

“We had a sense of calm about us tonight. I think we have been playing a bit frantic lately,” Smaka said. “Ashlyn Hall did a really nice job distributing the ball, Ashley Slater was really effective hitting and served well, Sarah Knoll was effective at the net, and Baby Hang did a really good job of passing.”

Slater led the offense with 12 aces and 34 kills, followed by Hall with 19 and Avolyn Lepo with 17, while Hang anchored the defense with 32 digs.

Hall greased the offense with 57 assists, ahead of Samantha Boeve’s 28, while Lepo anchored the net with eight blocks, just ahead of Olivia McMullen’s seven.

The Bucs return to action Monday at home as they open the district tournament by hosting Grand Rapids Union.
